French Dip Sandwich

Serves 4

French Dip Sandwich — made with 4 hoagie rolls, split lengthwise but still connected, 8 slices provolone cheese, halved, 10.5 ounce beef consomme, 10.5 ounce French onion soup, 1.5 cups water, 0.75 pound roast beef, thinly sliced.

  1. Preheat the oven's broiler to Low Broil.
  2. Place 2 half slices of cheese on each half of each roll.
  3. Place hoagie rolls on a baking sheet.
  4. Broil in the center of the oven until cheese is melted.
  5. Meanwhile, heat beef consomme, French onion soup, and water in a saucepan over medium heat until just simmering.
  6. Add beef until just heated through, 2 to 3 minutes.
  7. Remove roast beef from soup, allowing any excess liquid to drip back into the saucepan.
  8. Divide meat evenly among hoagie rolls.
  9. Divide soup into 4 dipping bowls and serve sandwiches with au jus.
